DVD Replication and Piracy

International DVD Piracy cost have been estimated in the hundreds of millions of dollars. Piracy can occur on may levels. In our domestic industry in the US we see it in Replication Facilities that are not licensed by either Sony or Philips. These would be “cheats” on the system often run their businesses transparent to most customers who do business with them. However, the replicators in question would be able to decrease their pricing to customers as they avoid paying the licensing fees and royalties required by law. This gives them an unfair advantage in pricing against their competitors. It is always a good idea to verify that the replicator you are using is licensed to produce DVDs.

New Flex Disc is “the” Green Alternative to Standard DVD

Wow!  That is all I can say about our new Flexible Disc.

This product can hold the same content as a standard single layer DVD, however, it uses only half the plastic and does not have the bonding material of a standard DVD.

What does this mean?  It means that the carbon foot print of this product is almost half that of the regular DVD and since there is no bonding material, this disc is recyclable.  Also, this disc is very thin and flexible, so you can add it to magazine advertising or mailing without having a bulky rigid DVD in your offering.

The best part of all is that this product sells for, on average , only 10% more in cost than standard DVD.

When I look at this product, all I see is benefits as far as the eye can see.  For a nominal increase in cost, this product provides a significant reduction on environmental impact over standard DVD.

New Low Carbon Footprint Flex Disc comes Under Fire

I just read and interesting article.

For the past few years there has been a more earth friendly DVD that has been produced by CD Digital Card in Rancho Cucamonga.  We have done business with CD Digital Card in the past and I have found them to be a very good company.

Their innovation is called a flex DVD and has only half the plastic that a normal Digital Versatile Disc has.  This innovation is a real step towards helping reduce the carbon foot print of the Video and Film industry.

It looks like this innovation is potentially at risk according to an article I just read in the Earth Times which states that  CD Digital Card “is taking the DVD Format/Logo Licensing Corporation (DVD FLLC) head on”.

From what I surmise, the FLLC is trying to stop the manufacture of the Flex Disc domestically.  I would like to have more information regarding this case, as it looks to me to be an issue of legal protectionism vs. an innovation that can do some real good for our environment.
